Bagan

About 680 KM by road, 70 minutes by air from Yangon. Situated in the unpromising arid region of central Myanmar. Bagan was the centre of a great kingdom and a glorious civilization, which flourished 11th – 13th centuries. This enchanting city is situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River and about 195 KM from Mandalay, the capital of Myanmar last kingdom. Bagan, the richest archeological site in Asia, noted not only for its over 2000 pagodas but also for its Lacquer-ware industry, offers a rich architectural heritage from 11th to 13th century.

Ananda Temple : Greek cross in plan, with two vaulted corridors around a central cube, with large standing images of the four Buddhas of the present world-age on each side and figures of King Kyansittha (the builder) and Shin Arahan on the western side: relief sculptures of Buddha’s life and green glazed tiles illustrating the Jatakas.

Thabyinnyu Temple : First and highest of the multi-storeyed temples ( 61 M high ), with high cubicles, conner stupas and “ flame “ pediments Providing soaring effect: steps from entrance to corridor around central mass, thence by internal and external stairways to upper storey with Buddha image.

Shwegugyi Temple: Small and elegant with fine stucco carvings and inscription in beautiful Pali verse.

Gawdawpalin Temple: A later multi-storeyed temple with four Buddha images around central cube in lower-storey and internal stairways to upper storey.

Bupaya Pagoda : in shape of gourd whose creepers, according to tradition, once threaten Bagan.

Manuha Temple:
With gigantic seated and reclining Buddha images.

Nanpaya Temple: with relief sculptures of Brahma and floral designs.

Gubyaukgyi Temple ( Myingaba ) : with exquisite stucco carvings, mural paintings illustrating the Jatakas and stone inscriptions in Pali, Myanmar, Mon and Pyu.

Dhamayangyi Temple : massive and noted for its fine brickwork.

Shwezigon Pagoda: Prototype of later Myanmar pagodas with glazed plaques on terraces illustrating the Jatakas and the 16th century bell donated by King Bayinnaung.
