Monywa

Monywa, situated on the eastern bank of Chindwin River, is about 136km to the west of Mandalay. Founded during Bagan period, it was given the name "Monywa" in 1888. Known as a gate way to Chindwin, it is a commercial centre of Chindwin valley.
Places worth visiting around Monywa are:-
Pho Win Hill, Twin Hill, Thanboddhay Temple, Ledi Inscription Hall, Shwe Gu Ni Pagoda and Kyaukka Lacquer-ware.

Sights:

Pho Win Hill: Pho Win Hill lies in Min Zu village tract among Yinmarbin township, westward from the Chindwin River. Wood sculptures, stone sculptures and frescoes (wall paintings) of exquisite workmanship representing ways of living and traditions of Nyaung Yan Period (AD- 1636 ) can be found here.

Twinn Hill: Twinn Hill, the crater of an extinct volcano about five to seven million years ago, is situated in Budalin township of Monywa district, about two miles eastward from the Chindwin River. It was also assumed that the emergence of the hill was due to the fall of a meteorite. Its remarkable measurements are 700 ft. in height (above sea-level), 17700 ft. in circumstances, 5930 ft. in diameter and 161 ft. in depth. It is a place where you can enjoy scenic view of the hill and surroundings.

Thanboddhay Temple: Thanboddhay Temple lies 7 miles to the south-east of Monywa. It is a unique temple in which 582357 Buddha images are enshrined. Constructed by Moenyin Sayadaw in1939, it is famous all over the country for its magnificent architecture. It is supposedly one of the wonders of the world.

Ledi Inscription: Built in 1925, Ledi Inscription Hall lies in the north-eastern part of Monywa. Ledi Monastery was built in 1886 by Ledi Sayadaw, an erudite Scholar in Myanmar literature and sculptures. We can find in the haIl 806 upright stone slabs on which scriptures are inscribed in Myanmar and Pali.

Shwe Gu Ni Pagoda: Shwe Gu Ni Pagoda lies in Kyaukka ~ village, 10 miles to the east of Monywa. Founded in 14 century, it was called Shwe Gu Ni in 1638 during the reign of King Tha Lun. The height is 108 ft. from the ground to the top. It was worshipped by successive rulers of Myanmar Kingdom.

Kyaukka Lacquer-ware: Lacquer-ware, practiced in Kyaukka village which lies 10 miles to the east of Monywa, is a famous Myanmar handicraft Historical evidence said that craft, taught by the Monk U Ke Tu, has flourishing since Kon Baung Period. You can comparatively study similar lacquer-ware which is practiced in Bagan.
