The Capital City and the main gateway to Myanmar is situated on
the Yangon River. It was renamed by King Alaungpaya in 1755. The
name "Yangon" means "End of Strife". The most
outstanding attraction in Yangon is Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the
wonders of the world. It is believed to have been built more
than 2500 years ago to enshrine a few strands of the Buddha’s
hair. This historic Shwedagon Pagoda towers almost 100 meters
above the green cityscape of Yangon and never fails to enchant
visitors.
